Old Age

by Kate MacDonald

The indignities that time inflicts upon us
I’ll list it for you right now and add a chorus.
Incontinence in your pants
dementia with rants,
and wrinkles like an ancient Brontosaurus.

Chorus (as promised)
OLD AGE, OLD AGE
IT VISITS EVERYONE
OLD AGE, OLD AGE,
IT JUST CAN’T BE OUTRUN.

I tried to stem the tide of youth’s surrender.
The local gym acquired another member,
I planned to show up twice a week,
fitness would not take long to peak.
Days later, my resignation I had to tender.

Chorus (Again?)
OLD AGE, OLD AGE
IT VISITS EVERYONE
OLD AGE, OLD AGE,
IT JUST CAN’T BE OUTRUN.

I daily slap on lotions by the bucket.
moisturise, exfoliate and pluck it.
I check the mirror every day.
Has even one line gone away? No!
It looks like time is winning. We can’t duck it.

Chorus (Last time)
OLD AGE, OLD AGE
IT VISITS EVERYONE
OLD AGE, OLD AGE,
IT JUST CAN’T BE OUTRUN.
