I thought I knew what love was
I thought I knew what hurt was
I thought about my twenties, my thirties
My indiscriminate worries
I thought about the mortgage
I thought about the car
I thought about my friends
as they all went off to war
I thought I’d live forever
Even well into my eighties
Then standing at a urinal I read the words
I beat cancer
And by cancer, I mean babies.
